SGBI is an industry leader providing cattlemen reliable genetic information and selection tools designed to assist with the identification of animals that are profitable and productive. SGBI’s dependable DNA-verified genetic evaluation enables cattlemen to make sound selection decisions, pinpointing animals that will perform regardless of environmental conditions.
Since 2013, Santa Gertrudis Breeders International has made tremendous genetic progress due to the association’s aggressive and innovative approach to data collection that documents breed performance from birth to harvest. Data sets have been utilized to improve genetic characteristics such as fertility, weaning weight, marbling and other economically relevant traits.
In 2013, SGBI was the first Bos indicus-influenced breed association to provide genomically enhanced expected progeny differences (EPDs). SGBI was also the first beef breed to use the powerful single-step method for incorporating DNA into the association’s genetic evaluation.
In 2018, the association released two new fertility EPDs – Heifer Pregnancy and Breed Back – and a new genetic selection tool, Igenity® Santa Gertrudis, a DNA-verified genetic selection tool that enables ranchers to evaluate candidate replacement heifers sired by registered Santa Gertrudis bulls.
The association’s tools enable breeders to better identify profitable genetics and put selection pressure on specific traits, such as carcass, reproductive, efficiency and growth traits.
