District 6 recognized John Taylor and the Mattingly family for their contributions to District 6 and the junior program. What a great event and fantastic attendance for the District 6 Juniors. Big thanks to Larry and Todd Osborne, Craig Lapossa, Anna Hiss Ron and Barb Moeller, and many others for all their help and support.


Junior show results were as follows, the Grand Champion Female was shown by Cody Heath, the Reserve Grand Champion Female was shown by Ashley Osborne, the Grand Champion STAR 5 Female was shown by Cody Heath and the Reserve Grand Champion STAR 5 Female was shown by Cannan Eades.

The 4th Annual Rocky Mountain Santa Gertrudis Association’s Spring Runoff Sale was strong, and Santa Gertrudis purebred and commercial females sold for a premium. The sale’s stand-out lot was Lot 86, Red Doc 5372 and heifer calf 7437, as this unique pair offered marbling and some of the most modern genetics in the breed. This high-selling lot was sold to Wiley Ranch, Deville, La., for $28,000. Several other females sold well, and the cattle were a good representation of modern, industry-based Santa Gertrudis cattle.

The high-selling Lot 34, Red Doc Riot 7069, was sold to partnership Flying C Ranch, Searcy, Ark., and Cotton Branch Plantation, Smithdale, Miss. The Red Hot Bull Sale kept its strength throughout due to strong support from commercial cattlemen. Bulls sold from Florida to Utah and internationally to Mexico and Australia.

The 2017 South Texas Heritage Sale was the biggest and best to date! Thank you to everyone who joined us in Robstown. A total of 151 head of Santa Gertrudis and STAR 5 females were sold.


The high-selling lot was consigned by the King Ranch, Kingsville, Texas, and was sold to Cherokee Ranch, Sedalia, Colo. Tom Martin of La Campana Ranch, George West, Texas, was awarded the 2017 Heritage Breeder award by the South Texas Santa Gertrudis Association.


La Campana Ranch, Hefte Ranch, Hondo and Agua Dulce, Texas, and Strait Ranches, Carrizo Springs, Texas, all donated Legacy Lot heifers. Two Legacy heifers were purchased by Wunderlich Farms, Brenham, Texas, and one was purchased by Kenley Kincannon, West Columbia, Texas. The donated Legacy Lots averaged $4,250 per head.

Red Doc Farm’s 13th annual bull sale had a strong showing, with several new buyers and established seedstock producers in the Santa Gertrudis breed. The auctioneer for the sale was Leo Casas III. The high-selling bull was the high-performance Red Doc Never Surrender 6013, who was sold to Cherokee Ranch in Sedalia, Colo. for $20,000. The bull market was strong in the midst of a softening cattle market. On average, Red Doc Farm bulls sold for more than $4,000 to commercial and registered cattlemen. Red Doc's high-marbling, high-performance and curve-bender bulls were bought from producers throughout the United States and Northern Mexico. The auctioneer for the sale was Leo Casas III. The high-selling heifer, Lot 91, Red Doc La Reina 6281, was sold to Schuster Farms and Townsend Cattle Company for $18,250. A close second to the high-selling heifer was Lot 92, Red Doc Duchess 5210, a deep- bodied bred heifer, who was sold to Cherokee Ranch, Sedalia, Colo. for $15,000. Several high-marbling, easy-fleshing females sold for premiums. The South Texas Heritage Sale was held in Robstown, Texas Nov. 19. There were many interested buyers, old members and new members who came out to view the 96 head of cattle. Despite a weak cattle market, prices held up well for quality purebred and STAR 5 females. There was a lot of excitement generated by the King Ranch consignment, KR 36/15, a moderate-framed, polled bred heifer with excellent carcass numbers. The high-selling female, King Ranch 36/15, was consigned by King Ranch and sold to Wiley Ranch. John Martin of John Martin Ranches received the first annual Heritage Breeder Award for his contributions to the Santa Gertrudis breed and many years of membership in the South Texas Santa Gertrudis affiliate.
